Drying clothes outside is a simple pleasure—sunlight, fresh air, and that crisp outdoor scent. But sometimes, bees land on your laundry, and it can be surprising.
Bees are drawn to scent, color, moisture, and warmth. Floral or fruity detergents can smell like flowers to them. Bright or light-colored clothes—white, yellow, pastels—look like blooms. Damp laundry or sun-warmed garments may feel like a water source or a cozy resting spot.
While it’s startling, bees usually aren’t aggressive unless threatened. The best approach is calm—don’t swat or shake. Most will fly off once they realize there’s no nectar. You can also gently move the clothes with a hanger or stick, or hang laundry in the shade to reduce visits. Fragrance-free detergents and drying clothes early or late in the day help too.
Bees aren’t trying to bother anyone—they’re just following instincts. With a few simple tweaks, you can keep your clothes bee-free while still appreciating the vital role these pollinators play in our world.
