Former President Donald Trump didn’t seem fazed when asked about the Les Misérables cast reportedly boycotting his appearance at the Kennedy Center. “I couldn’t care less,” he said. “All I do is run the country well.”
Trump attended the premiere with Melania, drawing a mix of applause and boos. The performance featured understudies, and while rumors swirled that drag performers might disrupt the event, only a few protests took place nearby.
Since taking over the Kennedy Center in early 2025, Trump ousted the board and named Richard Grenell as executive director—a move that upset some in the arts world. Celebrities like Shonda Rhimes and Ben Folds cut ties, and several LGBTQ events, including Pride Month shows, were scrapped or relocated, leading to backlash.
On the red carpet, Trump praised the building and Grenell’s leadership. He guessed his first Broadway show was Cats; Melania said hers was Phantom of the Opera and added she’s a fan of Les Misérables. Trump joked he’s seen it several times.
When asked if he relates more to Javert or Jean Valjean, Trump laughed and told Melania, “You better answer that one, honey.” She didn’t respond.
