The old farm had been abandoned for years — overgrown, falling apart, forgotten. But that morning, something was different.
Officer Simmons and his K9 partner, Zeus, were nearby running drills when a call came in: strange noises at a rundown ranch just beyond the county line. It was probably nothing — but Simmons went to check.
At first, everything seemed as expected: boarded-up house, sagging barn, no signs of life. But then Zeus froze. Tail rigid. Ears pinned. And then he barked — not his usual alert, but something urgent.
Without warning, Zeus lunged toward the barn, nearly yanking Simmons off his feet. Simmons called for backup. Inside, the barn reeked of damp hay and rust — but there was something else too. Zeus darted to a corner and started clawing at the floorboards.
Simmons saw it — a patch of uneven dirt and broken boards. Not a door. Just something badly hidden. They grabbed shovels and began digging.
Then came the sound: a hollow thud. Zeus barked frantically.
Moments later, they uncovered a plywood panel. Simmons lifted it and froze.
Four children stared back at him — terrified, filthy, and alive.
