In April 2011, Brigham and Women’s Hospital gave 30-year-old Mitch Hunter of Indiana a new face — and a new life. After a devastating 2001 accident left him severely injured, a team led by Dr. Bohdan Pomahac spent 14 hours replacing his nose, eyelids, muscles, and nerves.
Hunter’s family thanked the donor’s loved ones and the medical team, calling the transplant “a wonderful gift.” The hospital, already known for pioneering organ transplants, cemented its place as a leader in life-changing surgery.
