Teen mom who chose son’s birth over cancer treatment dies

At just 18, Brianna Rawlings was 17 weeks pregnant and dreaming of motherhood when her world came crashing down. What doctors had dismissed as pregnancy symptoms turned out to be a rare and aggressive blood cancer: NK cell leukemia.

Faced with an unthinkable choice—start treatment immediately and end her pregnancy, or delay treatment to give her baby a chance—Brianna chose her baby. She hoped her son would survive, even if it meant risking her own life.

Her son, Kyden, was born three months early via emergency C-section after Brianna developed a blood infection. He lived just 12 precious days. Brianna cherished every moment.

“Those 12 days I got to hold him, count his tiny fingers and toes, talk to him—those were the best days of my life,” she said.

Though heartbroken, Brianna fought to survive. For a time, it looked like she might. But complications worsened, and even a promising trial drug—funded by her family at $3,000 a week—wasn’t enough.

On December 29, 2018, Brianna passed away at 19.

She left behind a legacy of courage, love, and sacrifice—a mother’s fierce devotion that moved hearts around the world.
