Minnesota Shaken by Fatal Shooting of State Rep. Melissa Hortman and Husband
Minnesota is reeling after State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were found fatally shot in their Brooklyn Park home early Saturday morning. The tragedy comes just days after a separate shooting at the home of State Senator John Hoffman, who, along with his wife, was seriously injured. Both are recovering after undergoing emergency surgery.
Police were conducting a welfare check at the Hortman residence when they encountered a man pretending to be a police officer. When officers approached him, the suspect opened fire and fled the scene. A large-scale manhunt is now underway, involving local, state, and federal law enforcement. Authorities are urging the public to stay vigilant and be cautious of anyone impersonating law enforcement.
Governor Tim Walz described the shootings as an “apparent politically motivated assassination.” Federal agencies, including the FBI, are actively investigating the incidents.
Rep. Hortman, who served in the Minnesota House for more than 20 years and was a former Speaker, was widely respected for her leadership on education, transportation, and clean energy. Her husband, Mark, was a prominent figure in the tech industry.
In addition to her political legacy, Melissa was known as a devoted mother and a pillar in her community. The shocking loss has drawn condolences from across the country, including President Biden, who denounced the violence and called for national unity.
As investigations continue, Minnesotans are remembering the Hortmans not only for their public service but also for the personal warmth and dedication they brought to those around them.
