“Not a mouse, not a frog—just an unknown little creature,” read the caption from the Heart of the Forest wildlife rescue center, alongside photos of a mysterious newborn covered in soft black fur.
The tiny animal had been found and gently carried in by a dog, and soon after, its photos were shared online. That’s when the guessing game began.
Was it a kitten? A squirrel? A rabbit? Maybe a ferret—or even a baby mink? Some commenters joked it looked like a miniature bear… or perhaps something out of this world.
Rescuers shared that the little one was a female, just 3 or 4 days old, and already had small injuries. They weren’t sure exactly what she was at first either.
To help clear up the mystery, the center posted a helpful comparison: baby hares are born with fur and their eyes open, while newborn rabbits come into the world blind and hairless.
Whatever she turned out to be, one thing was clear—this tiny creature was lucky to be in safe hands, with a second chance at life.
