We were enjoying a family picnic when our son ran toward a tree, excited by the “beautiful patterns” on its bark. Just as he reached out to touch it, my husband dashed over and stopped him — just in time.

What looked like harmless markings were actually Lonomia caterpillars — one of the most venomous species in the world. A single touch can cause internal bleeding, unconsciousness, or even death.

We immediately alerted local authorities, who removed the caterpillars and placed warning signs on the tree.
