I’ve always loved walking in the forest near my home. It’s peaceful, grounding — my escape from the chaos of everyday life. But one quiet morning, that peaceful walk turned into something I’ll never forget.
As I wandered along a familiar path, I noticed something unusual up ahead. At first, it looked like someone had scattered bright yellow tennis balls across the forest floor. Odd, I thought — maybe kids had been playing nearby or someone had dumped trash.
But as I got closer, the “tennis balls” started to move. They made tiny, desperate sounds.
My stomach dropped.
They weren’t balls. They were baby chicks — dozens of them, maybe more. Tiny, fragile, barely alive. Some were still wet from hatching, others weakly trying to stand. They huddled together, peeping softly, trembling from the cold.
Someone had dumped them there on purpose.
I was horrified. Who could do something like this?
I quickly called the police, then reached out to a local animal shelter. Within thirty minutes, their team arrived and began gently gathering the chicks. They were just as stunned as I was.
Thankfully, many of the chicks were saved. But I’ll never forget the image of that pile — so vulnerable, so abandoned — in the middle of the woods.
As for whoever did this… I don’t know if they were ever caught. But I truly hope they are.
