High school girl claims first-place podium spot despite losing to trans athlete

At a California high school track meet, a silent protest reignited national debate over transgender athletes in women’s sports. During the CIF Southern Section Finals, Reese Hogan of Crean Lutheran High School finished second in the triple jump, but when winner AB Hernandez—who is transgender—left the podium, Hogan stepped onto the first-place spot.

Hernandez, born male and now competing as female, had won the event by over four feet. Her victory sparked renewed controversy, with critics questioning fairness and supporters defending her right to compete under current rules.

Online reactions were sharply divided. Some called for separate leagues for transgender athletes, while others pointed to the need for inclusion and respect. Hernandez dismissed the backlash as “ridiculous,” saying she followed all the regulations.

The issue remains unresolved. As more states consider bans and athletes like Hogan make quiet statements, the future of women’s sports continues to be fiercely debated.
