Rick Hurst, beloved for his role as the lovable Deputy Cletus Hogg on The Dukes of Hazzard, has passed away at the age of 79. His wife, Candace Kaniecki, confirmed the news, saying he died suddenly—just a week before he was scheduled to appear at a fan event in Tennessee. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Hurst joined The Dukes in 1979, quickly becoming a fan favorite for his goofy charm as Cletus, cousin to Boss Hogg. Though his role evolved over the years, his connection with the cast never faded. “We’re a family still,” co-star John Schneider once said.
Beyond Hazzard County, Rick had a rich career with appearances in Happy Days, MASH*, Steel Magnolias, The Karate Kid films, and more. He later reunited with his Dukes co-stars for several made-for-TV movies in the ’90s and early 2000s.
Rick is survived by his wife and son, actor Ryan Hurst, known for roles in Sons of Anarchy and Remember the Titans.
Fans remember Rick not only for his comedic talent but for being part of a show that still brings smiles to generations of viewers.
