It’s hard to imagine the cruelty some animals endure, but Buddy’s story is one of heartbreaking tragedy—and incredible resilience.

In April 2021, Buddy, a sweet and gentle dog from Mississippi, was horribly burned when a child set him on fire. He was found with his face charred and an extension cord around his neck. Because the child was under 12, he couldn’t be prosecuted.

Despite the severity of his injuries, Buddy’s spirit never broke. Under the care of Tunica Humane Society and veterinarians at Mississippi State University, he began a long journey of healing. He underwent multiple skin grafts, wore full-body bandages, and endured painful treatments—but never stopped wagging his tail or charming his caregivers.

Against the odds, Buddy’s eyesight was preserved. And in a huge milestone, he was eventually able to see again—his bandages removed without sedation for the first time in months. His personality began to shine once more, playful and full of life, often trotting around with a favorite ball in his mouth.

Buddy still has special needs—his skin is sensitive, and he’ll require eye drops and sun protection—but he now lives with a loving forever family and continues to heal.

His story is a reminder of both the worst and the best of humanity—and the unbreakable spirit of a dog who refused to give up.
