BREAKING: Republicans boot stomp the American people by advancing Donald Trump’s “big beautiful bill” that will strip Medicaid coverage from a staggering 10.3 million people.
And it gets so much worse…
“It’s clear that all this bill does is take away health care for millions of Americans in order to pay for giant tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. And that’s not what the American people want,” said Democratic Congressman Frank Pallone Jr.
The Republican-controlled House Energy and Commerce Committee advanced the legislation in question with a 30-24 vote along party lines. Democrats predictably voting against the shockingly destructive bill.
It now moves to the House Budget Committee where it will be combined with legislation from other committees to include tax cuts and tax breaks.
The Energy and Commerce Committee has been working to carve out $880 billion in funding cuts over the next ten years and, as expected, much of those reductions came from slashing Medicaid.
Not only that, but the MAGA plan implements work requirements for childless individuals from ages 19 to 64 and prevents states from taxing health providers to pay for Medicaid programs.
On top of that, it would penalize any states that pay for Medicaid for undocumented migrants. As usual, Republicans are mixing partisan political grandstanding with crucial government programs. They don’t care if they magnify suffering in this country so long as their rabid MAGA base is pleased.
The bill would also enshrine Trump’s shortening of the Affordable Care Act’s open enrollment period, a move solely designed to ensure that fewer Americans have healthcare. By slashing federal expenses, Republicans hope to make room for more unnecessary tax cuts for the super rich.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, 10.3 million people would lose Medicaid coverage by 2034 thanks to this legislation and 7.6 million people would end up uninsured.
As if that weren’t bad enough, the bill also slashes crucial climate change and pollution bills that Democrats passed in 2022, including a $20 billion “green bank” program designed to fund sustainable green projects as well as a $3 billion block grant program for reducing pollution in marginalized communities.
Since they’re bought and paid for by the fossil fuel companies, Republicans are still insisting that climate change is a “hoax” despite the alarmingly rapid increase of extreme weather events. They’re selling out our children’s future for campaign donations.
