10 Years Since the 35W Bridge Collapse
The 2007 collapse of Minneapolis’ Interstate 35W bridge killed 13 and injured 145, caused by a design flaw and heavy construction loads.
Since then, bridge safety has improved nationwide—structurally deficient bridges dropped from 12% to 9%, with Minnesota repairing or replacing most of its critical spans. New bridges now use stronger materials, last longer, and undergo stricter inspections.
On the 10-year anniversary, the city honored survivors and responders, remembering the tragedy and the lessons it taught about infrastructure safety.
