In March 2024, boaters at McGee Creek Reservoir in Oklahoma spotted strange, jelly-like blobs clinging to underwater tree limbs. They looked alien—but were actually bryozoans, ancient creatures that have lived on Earth for nearly 470 million years.
Bryozoans, or “moss animals,” are harmless colonies that filter water, improve clarity, and provide food for fish and snails. Far from being a threat, their presence signals a clean, healthy ecosystem.
So while they may look eerie, these natural water filters are proof that nature knows how to take care of itself.
