What began as a normal shopping trip in north Austin on August 11, 2025, ended in heartbreak. Three lives were lost—including 4-year-old Astrid Fung—when 32-year-old Ethan Nieneker attacked outside a Target store.
The victims also included Hector Leopoldo Martinez Machuca, 24, a Target employee, and Adam Chow, 65, Astrid’s grandfather. Chow’s wife survived with minor injuries. Nieneker fled in a stolen car, causing crashes across the city before being arrested less than an hour later.
Loved ones are remembering the victims for their kindness and joy. A fundraiser for their funerals has already drawn nearly $50,000 in support.
This tragedy comes just two weeks after a separate attack in Manhattan that left five people dead, including an NYPD officer.
