We were enjoying a peaceful family picnic when our young son ran over to a tree, amazed by the “beautiful patterns” on its bark. He reached out to touch it — but my husband leapt up and stopped him just in time.

What looked like harmless tree bark was actually a cluster of Lonomia caterpillars — some of the most venomous insects in the world. One touch can cause internal bleeding, fainting, or even death, especially in children or those with weakened immune systems.

These caterpillars blend perfectly with tree trunks, making them nearly invisible.

Thankfully, we called environmental officials, who removed them safely. Since then, we’ve made it a rule to always be cautious in nature — gloves, a magnifying glass, and a small first aid kit are now part of every outing.
