One California homeowner got the surprise of a lifetime when strange noises in the walls led to an unexpected discovery—more than 700 pounds of acorns stashed away by a very determined woodpecker.
According to NBC News and a pest control company that handled the case, the resident first noticed odd sounds coming from inside the walls. Then came the bugs—tiny insects occasionally creeping out of the drywall. Curious and a little concerned, they called in the experts.
When the pest control team opened up the wall, they couldn’t believe what they found: an avalanche of acorns poured out. It was soon revealed that the house had become a secret storage site for an industrious acorn woodpecker—part of the Melanerpes family—who had spent months (or possibly years) drilling holes through the roof and siding to stash its winter supply.
In total, over 700 pounds—about 320 kilograms—of acorns were removed. While it may have caused a bit of chaos for the homeowner, it’s hard not to admire the little bird’s dedication to preparation!
