Minnesota Shaken by Fatal Shooting of State Rep. Melissa Hortman and Husband

Minnesota is reeling after State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were found fatally shot in their Brooklyn Park home early Saturday morning. The tragedy comes just days after a separate shooting at the home of State Senator John Hoffman, who, along with his wife, was seriously injured. Both are recovering after undergoing emergency surgery.

Police were conducting a welfare check at the Hortman residence when they encountered a man pretending to be a police officer. Governor Tim Walz described the shootings as an “apparent politically motivated assassination.” Federal agencies, including the FBI, are actively investigating the incidents.

Rep. Hortman, who served in the Minnesota House for more than 20 years and was a former Speaker, was widely respected for her leadership on education, transportation, and clean energy. Her husband, Mark, was a prominent figure in the tech industry.
