One man has survived the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171, which went down shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12. The flight was en route to London Gatwick and was carrying 242 people when it crashed into a residential area, hitting a medical college dorm in Meghani Nagar.
Among those on board were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian.
Initially believed to be a total loss, officials later confirmed a miraculous survivor: Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British-Indian man seated in 11A. He described the horror to the Hindustan Times: “I heard a loud noise… when I stood up, there were bodies everywhere. I just ran. Someone pulled me into an ambulance.”
His brother was also on the flight but seated elsewhere—his condition is still unknown.
Air India Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, pledging full support to affected families. The Tata Group has also promised to cover medical costs and provide compensation.
Emergency crews continue to search the wreckage, and the final death toll remains uncertain.
