The parents of 10-year-old Autumn Bushman are sharing their heartbreak after losing their daughter to suicide on March 21.
Autumn, a lively fourth-grader from Roanoke, had always been full of energy and spirit. But in the weeks before her death, her parents noticed troubling changes — she slept more, smiled less, and began wearing darker clothes.
Autumn had been targeted by bullies, especially because she stood up for other kids being picked on. Despite her parents reporting the bullying to the school, it continued, both in person and online.
Her father, Mark, explained, “At this age, kids have phones and tablets, so there’s no escape.”
The school is investigating the situation but has not commented in detail out of respect for the family.
Friends and the community are mourning Autumn’s loss. A close family friend urged everyone to talk openly about bullying and support each other.
Autumn’s family is holding visitation and funeral services this weekend to honor her memory and raise awareness about the devastating effects bullying can have on young lives.
