‘Cheers’ star George Wendt dies aged 76

TV Legend George Wendt, Beloved for Role as Norm on Cheers, Dies at 75

Tributes are pouring in following the death of actor George Wendt, best known for his iconic role as Norm Peterson on the classic sitcom Cheers.

Wendt passed away peacefully in his sleep early Tuesday morning, May 20, his family confirmed.

“George was a devoted family man, a cherished friend, and a trusted confidant to all lucky enough to know him. He will be missed forever,” a family representative shared with the BBC.

Wendt’s portrayal of the lovable barfly Norm made him a household name. He appeared in all 275 episodes of Cheers during its 11-season run from 1982 to 1993 and received six consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

His Cheers co-star Ted Danson expressed his sorrow in a statement to the New York Post:

“I am devastated to hear that Georgie is no longer with us. I am sending all my love to Bernadette and the children. It’s going to take me a long time to get used to this. I love you, Georgie.”

John Ratzenberger, who played Cliff Clavin on the show, also shared heartfelt words with ABC News:

“For eleven years on Cheers, we shared a stage, countless laughs, and one of television’s most beloved friendships. George brought Norm to life with subtle brilliance—he made it look effortless. That was his gift.”

Wendt was last seen in public in late January 2024 in Los Angeles, using a cane while accompanied by his wife. Though no official cause of death has been confirmed, reports indicate he had dealt with health issues related to his weight in recent years, including chest pains and undergoing coronary bypass surgery.

Concerns for his health intensified after a Cheers cast reunion at the ATX TV Festival in June 2023, marking the 30th anniversary of the show’s finale. Fans expressed worry over his frail appearance.

Throughout his career, which began in the late 1970s, Wendt also appeared in numerous other TV series and films, earning respect across the entertainment industry.

His passing marks the end of an era for fans of classic television and comedy.

Rest in peace, George Wendt. Norm may have left the bar, but he’ll never leave our hearts.
