Flashback: 2016 Courtroom Filled with Cops After Attempted Murder of Officer in Atlantic City

Two men who tried to kill a police officer during a robbery in Atlantic City, New Jersey, got a powerful reminder of who stands behind law enforcement—when they walked into a courtroom packed with police officers.

The incident began when two Atlantic City officers responded to a robbery in progress involving three suspects targeting three people outside Caesars casino. The situation quickly escalated into a shootout. One of the suspects, 25-year-old Jerome Damon, was killed. Officer Josh Vadell, 29, was critically injured and rushed to the hospital. Thankfully, his condition later stabilized.

“Our hearts are heavy right now, but we remain fully committed to capturing those responsible,” said New Jersey PBA President Patrick Colligan in a statement. “We ask for your prayers for the officer, his family, and the entire Atlantic City Police Department.”

When the two surviving suspects, Demitrius Cross and Martel Chisolm, arrived for their court appearance, they were met with a powerful show of unity: the courtroom was filled with fellow officers there to support their injured colleague.

Officer Vadell’s wife later shared an encouraging update on Facebook:

“Update on Josh… he is doing amazing!!! They took him off the ventilator this morning. He’s able to speak a few words, sit up in a chair with support, and is starting to regain movement on his left side,” she wrote. “He’s improving every day, and I believe it’s because of the overwhelming love and support we’ve received. I can’t reply to everyone individually, but please know I see your messages and I’m telling Josh how loved he is.”

The story quickly went viral, with people across the country praising the officer’s bravery and the incredible solidarity shown by his fellow law enforcement officers.

“These two are a menace to society. They should never be let back out,” one person commented on Facebook.

“Great to see the men and women in blue standing together,” another wrote.
