Maverick Flinn, a joyful 4-year-old with a love for toy tractors and farm life, tragically lost his life in a farming accident in southern Indiana on June 23. The accident also claimed the life of his beloved great-grandmother, Nancy Ann “Nanny” Fox, 68.
Maverick had simply wanted to ride along in the combine with his great-grandfather. But when they dismounted, a tragic tractor incident ended two lives and devastated their close-knit family.
In the days that followed, the town of Seymour came together to support the Flinns. Neighbors helped harvest two weeks’ worth of wheat in just 24 hours, and a GoFundMe for a memorial playground in Maverick’s honor quickly surpassed $70,000.
Maverick was remembered as a vibrant, kind-hearted boy who loved being outside, racing monster trucks, visiting the fire station with his dad, and lighting up every room with his laughter.
Nancy Fox was a devoted wife and farm matriarch who cherished life in the fields and on the porch with family.
The Flinn family, deeply rooted in public service — with both Maverick’s father and grandfather serving as firefighters — has launched the “Maverick Minute,” encouraging farmers to pause for 60 seconds before using equipment, hoping to prevent future tragedies.
“We’re going to continue on in his honor,” said Maverick’s uncle. “And we’re going to make sure this never happens again.”
