WASHINGTON —Federal Judge Blocks Trump Administration From Cutting Funds to Sanctuary Cities
A federal judge in California has blocked the Trump administration from withholding federal funds from so-called “sanctuary” cities and counties.
U.S. District Judge William Orrick ruled on Thursday that a preliminary injunction was necessary, stating that the executive orders in question were unconstitutional—just like similar orders issued by former President Donald Trump in 2017. The ruling came in response to a lawsuit brought by San Francisco and more than a dozen other local governments that challenged two of Trump’s executive orders aimed at punishing jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
In his decision, Judge Orrick, who serves in San Francisco, ordered the federal government to stop any efforts to withhold, freeze, or place conditions on federal funding for these jurisdictions. He also directed the administration to notify all federal agencies of the ruling in writing by Monday.
