The Kidney That Outlasted the Marriage
In 2005, George Lopez’s wife, Ann Serrano, made an extraordinary sacrifice: she donated a kidney to save his life. Lopez’s health had been deteriorating rapidly due to a congenital condition, and Serrano didn’t hesitate, calling it an “easy decision” to help someone she loved.
But even before the transplant, cracks in their relationship had formed. Lopez had been unfaithful—a reality Serrano later learned more fully through tabloid revelations. Despite her hopes that the surgery and renewed health would bring their family closer, Lopez’s fame — and his infidelities — only grew. By 2010, Serrano filed for divorce, ending their 17-year marriage.
Yet even after the painful split, the two maintained a strong bond. They continued to co-parent their daughter, Mayan, and remained committed to their joint charitable work through the Lopez Foundation. Today, George and Mayan even star together in the NBC sitcom Lopez vs Lopez, using humor to address — and heal — the wounds of the past.
Though their marriage ended, Serrano’s incredible act of love endures. Her kidney still sustains Lopez’s life, a powerful symbol of sacrifice, forgiveness, and resilience.
