Rhys Russell was only 18 when he lost his life to a fast-moving form of melanoma. What began as a small red patch on his scalp—painless and easy to ignore—turned out to be stage four cancer by the time it was diagnosed in late 2021. Despite treatment, the disease had already spread to his organs.
His father, Oli, a nurse, is now speaking out to challenge the common belief that melanoma mostly affects older adults or people with a history of sun damage. Rhys didn’t fit either category—he was young, healthy, and had no obvious risk factors. His story serves as a sobering reminder that melanoma can strike anyone.
In his final days, Rhys found joy in a surprise Zoom call from his soccer idol, Jack Grealish, who also sent a signed jersey and heartfelt message. Now, his family is working to raise awareness and funds to fulfill Rhys’ last wish: to have his ashes laid to rest in the memorial garden at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium.
Their message is simple but urgent—don’t ignore changes in your skin, no matter your age. Early detection can make all the difference.
